hatI purchased my first unicycle over 26 years ago with money from a paper route.  At the age of 10, it only took a day to get rolling on the old 20″ Schwinn. I rode almost daily for a few years, but my interest waned after I bought my first good road bike. As I got more serious about two-wheeled competition, the unicycle was put into storage.

Fast forward 20 years, and I’m back to riding the unicycle daily. In March of 2007 I was riding my cyclo-cross bike on some local trails.  Just as I was finishing, I spotted someone on a unicycle riding the same trails I had just completed.  But… on one wheel!  We struck up a conversation and he let me try his KH 29.  In that brief moment I was hooked.  The unicyclist was Team Rollercoaster’s Steve Relles.

wheelSoon after my encounter with Steve, I purchased a new KH 29, and with relentless prompting from Steve, started riding off road.  Within 3 months, I was racing the uni in local mountain bike races with Steve and Roland.  And less than one year later (with a few more races under my belt), I was off to Nova Scotia to compete in the 500 mile 5-day unicycle race called Ride the Lobster.

The next challenge is our expedition to Panama. I’m really looking forward to riding with such good friends.

I’m a 36 year old software engineer and owner of GalleryDriver, Ltd. I’m lucky to have a supportive wife who doesn’t think unicycling is too crazy. We live in Albany, NY with two dogs and 3 or more cats.

  2. Hey Perry and Laura! How the heck are you? Just decided to look you up. Unicycle looks interesting. Do you remember going to see some art on 57th street together? Was that Mark Ryder by any chance? Hope to hear from you.
